Corel painter is a crap load of fun but every time I use the impasto brushes it comletely changes the values and saturation of the entire painting, usually skewing it towards more blueish hues. I've gotta figure out a way to circumvent this. I think I'll try striking the computer with my fist.

I got sucked into this movie earlier tonight and I just need to vent. "The Jimmy Show" synopsis:
Independent film about a working class shlub in New Jersey. Loses job, loses wife, loses kid, mother dies, the end.
One of the most wretched and self-indulgent movies I've ever seen. It was like having to sit through a two hour recitation of poetry from a Fifteen-year-old goth kid.
If anyone feels the need to experience this movie, all you have to do is drive to the Pine Barrens in Jersey on a cold winters day and gently place a gun in your mouth. Oops, looks like you can't afford bullets, so there's nothing left to do but crumple into a fetal ball and cry and cry until your tears form frozen walrus tusks on your chin. Awful.

Okay, Here's my spiel: Work has been slow. Like, really slow. I've been doing this professionally for over a decade, so I really don't want to have to resort to getting a "regular" job and start all over again getting paid bupkus for an honest days work. I've tried agents, but agents rarely replied to my emails and when they did, they told me that they're having a hard enough time getting work for the artists they already have on their roster.
T-shirt contest sites like www.threadless.com and www.moderntee.com have been very good to me, but I can't live off of contests.
So there are freelance sites like guru and elance that offer quick jobs for illustrators. You pay a yearly fee, and you get to bid on jobs they post on their site. Simple right?
Yeah, except for the part that in a global market, folks from China and India are charging $2 an hour or less. It doesn't matter how good you are, or how much experience you have, businesses will usually pick the lowest bid of the most adequate illustrator, even if it's awful.
Plus, there are a LOT of scumbags out there who'll try and scam the system. They'll email me and say they're considering me for the job, but they need a quick (and free) example of how I would tackle a sketch. And of course, being desperate to impress and also being a ginormous chump , I say okay and lo and behold, they never get back to me. Here's the scam: they ask the same thing from dozens of other artists, and before you know it, they've got hundreds
of pieces of free art. Inconsistent styles, but these guys aren't exactly looking for quality here.

Whipped those out in a few hours, he requested some revisions, I begrudgingly revised them, and then he pulled a Keyser Söze and poof. Gone.
Seriously man, I hope that guy drowns in a bathtub filled with hobo pee.

Truly, Boy George is a national treasure. This little ditty popped into my head a few days ago and I found myself searching for the video on youtube.

That red wig he was sporting kinda looked like an unruly mass of rusty publes. Honestly, I thought I was watching a Cindy Lauper video for the first few minutes. I used to love the idea of war until I heard that song and saw those school children prancing about. It's such a shame Mr. Boy is off to the big house for thrashing that nice young prostidude with a length of chain when he was next in line to get the Nobel prize.

About two days ago, a long forgotton tune somehow popped into my head. A little ditty from Sesame Street and the Electric Company about the magic of numbers as told in the language of funk. After a bit of sleuthing I found it on youtube.
What I didn't take into account was the songs inherent catchiness. Now all Emily and I do is wander our house in a zombie-like stupor counting in sing-song.

I finally popped my cherry and saw fishbone for the first time a few nights ago at J. C. Dobbs. Easily one of the best live performances I've seen in my life. It was packed tight, with everyone passing joints around and skanking their hearts out. Emily got a sweaty kiss from Angelo Moore and refused to wash her lips for a short while.

Some stuff i did for Toybiz. They needed some marvel art re-created in illustrator so there wouldn't be any of those nasty jagged edges inherent in bitmapped images. I was going to redraw and re-ink, but then i thought, "Screw that mess, I'm gonna just do it in illustrator. So that meant painstakingly re-creating everything, line by line, clickity-click. Of course, I get off on that sh*t, so I blew through it pretty quickly.
It was awesome working over some of my favorite illustrators. Chris Bachelo, Mike Deodato, Brian Hitch, Adam Kubert, the amazing Olivier Coipel, just to name a few.

Video game expo

Emily and I stopped by the Video Game Expo at the convention center on Sunday and holy crap was it lame. I was hoping to show my portfolio and get some contacts, or maybe buy some cheap games and get some giveaways. Nope. Badly organized, no games for sale, no giveaways, and only a handfull of industry people were there. It sucked major choad.
There were a few costumes there. Mostly star warriors and a few animeniacs; I got a great shot of Emily getting her neck snapped by some dude in a darth vader costume. And there were a few cool artists there. One cool thing, I got to talk to an awesome guy from Obsidian Entertainment who was giving out portfolio reviews and tips.

I love living in west philly. After Obama got elected everyone in my neighborhood (including Emily and I) freaked the hell out and poured out into the streets. Hootin'. A-hollerin'. Banging pots and pans, dancing jigs, and all manner of Hootinannying. We walked down to 47th and Baltimore and there were a few hundred people chanting and drumming, dizzy with accomplishment.
Anarchists and thugs were waving the american flag with actual, honest-to-goodness pride.

Halloween Sucks

OK, Halloween doesn't suck. It's actually one my favorite times of year, but it seems like no one really gives a fig anymore. I went to see Clamfight and Slumlord play at the millcreek tavern and I've never seen a bigger bunch of suck-ass costumes.
Every girl was some variation of whore-bag: sassy pirate, naughty nurse or the ubiquitous angel/faerie complete with six-inch stripper shoes.
Every guy was either an Elvis, a pimp, or a phillies fan. There were exceptions of course, but just because you spend $50 on a foam keg costume doesn't mean you don't still suck the ass.
The worst was the 12-year-old prosti-tots trick-or-treating around my neighborhood. I guess they're trying to emulate the perceived glamour of the Spears and Aguileras of the world, but seriously, their parents need to be punched in the cockles.
It's the general laziness that kills me. And the lack of imagination. Nobody even tries to have fun with it. OK, I'm not expecting some amazing shit like this:
